Senior Pupil Support Officer

Braidburn Special School

Salary: £34,452 - £40,501 (pro rata for part time and sessional)

Hours: 25 per week, 39 weeks sessional 

Braidburn School is situated in the South-West of Edinburgh. Braidburn is part of the Firhill Campus along with Oxgangs Primary School and Firhill School. Braidburn School provides a positive learning environment for learners aged 3-18 years where the presumption of mainstream cannot be met. Learners require a significantly modified learning environment. The needs of learners are primarily associated with intellectual disability and visual, sensory, health and medical needs. A significant number of learners have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The maximum school roll, including the nursery is 136 learners. During session 2026-27, the Primary department will comprise seven primary classes: with a further nine classes based in the Secondary department.

The post holder will manage a significant and diverse caseload of children and young people, supervise or mentor a group of PSAs and PSWs and colleagues, working in a busy learning environment, in family homes and other community venues. Time spent on tasks will be defined by the needs of the school and depending on the demands of their caseload and supervisory tasks.

  • Support induction
  • Staff may spend a minimum of 20% of their time involved in bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling and sitting on the floor.
  • Working in accordance with risk management procedures, the post holder will work on a group or 1 to 1 basis with children and young people with a range of social, emotional and care needs, some of whom may have associated dysregulated behaviour for periods of time and require support with self or mutual regulation. This can include incidences of violent or aggressive behaviour directed at staff or other pupils.
  • This post holder will have regular contact with children and young people, other colleagues in school and from partner services and parents and carers. At times this may be confrontational with the postholder taking an opposing view.
  • The post may involve pushing manual wheelchairs for activities and outings or around the school, as well as assisting with the transfer of pupils into seats in school transport in confined spaces, ensuring pupils are secure.
  • The postholder may spend a minimum of 10% of their time carrying out routine personal care of pupils, including toileting and changing of soiled clothing and supervising or manually supporting the pupil to eat and drink using tube feeding and administering medication.

Supervision and management of people

The post holder will manage a significant and diverse caseload of children and young people, supervise or mentor a group of PSAs and PSWs and colleagues, working in a busy learning environment, in family homes and other community venues. Time spent on tasks will be defined by the needs of the school and depending on the demands of their caseload and supervisory tasks.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
